CALLAS – IO SONO MARIA CALLAS

CALLAS – IO SONO MARIA CALLAS

by Vanna Vinci

The story and the myth of Maria Callas: an icon of our time, told and evoked in a graphic novel, fruit of a very accurate research work. Through the images and words of Vanna Vinci, Callas becomes a character from Greek tragedy (of which this book revises the scheme, even using the choir) and, at the same time, a superstar. An exciting and moving work, from which emerges a reflection on the strength of art as a personal redemption and on talent as a blessing and condemnation.

A legend, what is a legend? After all, I think I was a real human being

in the course of over forty years Giulio Coltellacci (Rome, 1916-1983) left his mark in every area of the performing arts: he conferred dignity and brilliance to musical comedy, he was movie star’ costume designer, he signed the sets for films, for theatre, ballet, and opera. He builts stage machinery, he painted on canvas and theatre backdrops. He illustrated journals, imagined and created fashion shows and work areas, designed and made furnishings for private residences and public premises. A pragmatic artist without a hint of snobbism, Coltellacci could switch elegance, the same amazing, knowledge of what a stage is like, the same unfailing imagination. This monograph retraces for the very first time his extraordinary career.

DE CHIRICO ALLA SCALA

DE CHIRICO ALLA SCALA

Curated by Vittoria Crespi Morbio

Young Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978) made his debut in the theatre world with the Ballets Suédois and the Ballets Russes in the 1920s. At the time he believed that opera was a genre on the wane. And yet he would devote a considerable part of his artistic career to the musical theatre, signing dozens of performances for the leading Italian institutions. Ranging from echoes of Metaphysical painting to a conception of a neo-classical and neo-baroque ‘Grand Théâtre’, his work as a set and costume designer was a perpetually evolving challenge, now won and then lost, but is above all the secret and problematic self-portrait of an outstanding figure in 20th-century art.

KOKKOS ALLA SCALA

KOKKOS ALLA SCALA

Curated by Vittoria Crespi Morbio

Scenographer, costume designer, and director, Yannis Kokkos is one of the leading figures in contemporary theatre. Greek by birth and Parisian by choice, he developed a highly original conception of dramaturgy, starting from drawing, the matrix of the creative idea: drawing whereby the stage action unfolds, in its perspectives, like an ongoing flow. Essential rather than decorative, the stage according to Kokkos enchanted the audience of La Scala in a historic version of Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande and masterpieces by Wagner, Gluck, and Pizzetti. Elegance and simplicity are steeped in a symbolic intensity echoing the theatre of ancient Greece.

OPPO ALLA SCALA

OPPO ALLA SCALA

Curated by Vittoria Crespi Morbio

Extremely powerful, feared, and respected under the Fascist regime, Cipriano Efisio Oppo (1891-1962) was almost forgotten after the war, and today his name and his work are scarcely known. He was harmed by his political credo that led him to become a deputy in Parliament and director of the Quadriennale romana, a tireless organiser of events. Yet Oppo was a complex, many-sided figure, willing to promote ‘rebellious’ artists and developing a poetics including his theatre work as scenographer and costume designer that remains a legacy worthy of attention. His stagings at La Scala, in Rome, in Florence, partake of the tradition of Italian painting and assert an Olympian serenity, unperturbed before the tragedies of History.

METLICOVITZ ALLA SCALA

METLICOVITZ ALLA SCALA

Curated by Vittoria Crespi Morbio

Aloyal and determined Triestine, Leopoldo Metlicovitz (1868-1944) was a key figure in the elaborate advertising system of Casa Ricordi and played a role in shaping its image. Posters, playbills, postcards, drawings to be offered to theatre subscribers, illustrations on the covers of scores, signs advertising a product, on each and every single thing Metlicovitz bestowed his clear, classical mark. But he did not stop there: his graphic works influenced the spirit of his time, steeped the collective imaginary, and shaped a perfect world of opera heroines, department stores, ship launching ceremonies, perfumes, everyday articles, Argentinian tangos. Offspring of the Art Nouveau decorative spirit, Metlicovitz finally distanced himself, privileging subdued moods, concentration, the static pose liable to arouse the audience’s emotions: his works distil a sorrowful humanism that continues to enthrall us even now.

STREHLER AND HIS SCENOGRAPHERS

STREHLER AND HIS SCENOGRAPHERS

Curated by Vittoria Crespi Morbio

Giorgio Strehler’s theatre questioned modern culture from the postwar period to the present.
Countless studies, analyses, and reflections were devoted to him, but one aspect has never been systematically examined: the relationship between the director and his scenographers. This is a crucial critical issue however, and perusing it throughout Strehler’s career leads to discover new aspects and confute prejudice. Along this path, that is not Always straight, we encounter great names of 20th-century painting, including Guttuso and Clerisi, Savinio and Casorati, and Leonor Fini, until it Narrows down to three outstanding figures: Gianni Ratto, Luciano Damiani, and Ezio Frigerio, the scenographers od Strehler’s most memorable performances.
